Shipping Container HOME Project, 2013-14

This project as a whole is a simultaneous construction of a sustainable shipping container house, a documentary movie of the process, and events/happenings in and around the house. Read my artist's statement here...

**I am honored to say that I am the 2014 recipient of the Hung Liu Prize from the Mills College Visual Arts Dept. for this project!

The Shipping Container HOME Project began in 2013 when I decided to build a house as part of my graduate thesis work at Mills College. The first part was the research and design, which I did in conjunction with taking a "Green Design" architecture course at UC Berkeley. At the end of 2013 I acquired a used shipping container that had been previously used as a construction office and began the process of deconstruction, reclamation, and building. I spent my last semester at Mills constructing the house on campus using reclaimed and reused materials, documenting the process, and hosting happenings and events in and around the house. The project plan also includes a second phase of building, which will be the addition of a bathroom and expanded closet/storage space in another 20' shipping container. This second build phase will also include the implemenation of sustainable and off-grid energy systems that utilize solar/wind resource, water catchment, and composting systems.
